What is erosion?
Erosion is a natural process which is occurring all over
the world. Erosion transforms the coastal landscape by means of water, wind, and
ice. Along our coastlines there is a continuous interaction between winds,
waves, currents, and sediment. The shape of our beaches is gradually changing
which may result in a widening of some beaches whereas other are subject of
erosion, where there is a loss of sediment and associated coastal retreat. This
latter phenomenon is generally referred to as coastal erosion. The opposite
situation is known as coastakl accretion.
Why does erosion occur?
Many factors copntribute to coastal erosion. Most
of these are quite natural and depend on variation in wave climate, currents,
water levels, and the geological composition (sand, gravel, rock, etc.) There
are, however, also several other factors that are caused by various human
activities. The natural conditions and processes in the coastal zones are, of
course, governing the evolution and changes over time in these areas. Human
activities will, in many cases, change the often delicate balance between these
processer and, thus, also affect the further evolution of these areas. The fact
that man is utilizing the coastal zones to the extent we are in today’s world,
for recreation, residences, industry, and other infrastructure poses a potential
threat to the long-term sustainability of the coastal zones. In order to address
this issue, we must learn to understand all possible effects of our exploitation
or coastal areas and how we may reduce the negative impacts of our activities,
now and in the future.

The beach east of Ystads Sandskog has been suffering from beach erosion for many ears. In order to protect the beach from wave impact and further erosion, the municipality of Ystad decided to install detached breakwaters consisting of crushed rock material and bigger blocks. The breakwaters were placed about 100 m off to initial shoreline near Harstigen, Ystads Sandskog. The breakwaters are located within an existing Natura 2000 area south of Highway 9. As a result, particular environmental considerations were taken.
The plan covers a total of five breakwaters. The first installation comprised of three structures (breakwaters 3, 4, and 5), each consisting of armour blocks of 1,500 kg with a total volume of 500 m3. The structures’ foot is comprised of blocks of about 150 kg each with a total volume of 100 m3. The core of the structures is made of crushed rock of about 100-400 mm with a volume of 200 m3. The cost of the detached breakwaters amounted to about 1 to 1.2 Mkr each. The breakwater crests are located about 1 m above MSL. The visible surface area at MSL is about 20 x 6 m2 and the distance between the structures is about 40 m. The second installation (breakwaters 1 and 2) is planned to be performed during 2010.
