Dag Hammarskjöld's Backåkra
Give peace a chance!
|
The UN General Secretary Dag Hammar-skjöld used John Lennon’s words 10 years before John wrote them down. Peace, how-ever, gave neither the opportunity, both died ahead of their time. When Dag Hammar-skjöld died in an aeroplane crash in 1961 he left Backåkra, a beautiful farmhouse built around a courtyard in the Hagestad nature reserve. It is now a haven of refuge for all who wish to remember his work and – give peace a chance. Backåkra is now managed by the Swedish Tourist Authority and has been turned into a museum. Here you will find an exhibition of things that Dag Hammarskjöld was pre-sented with or bought on his trips as well as furniture and art from his New York off-ice and home. Every year, people from all over the world visit this small farmhouse, a clear indication that his memory lives on. Thev south wing of the farm is reserved as a summer retreat for members of the Swedish Academy. Dag Hammarskjöld was an author and translator and one of the 18 members of the Academy. The farm owns 60 acres of land that Dag Hammarskjöld was particularly fond of . And it is here that a place of meditation has been set aside; a place that is very much appreciated for both weddings and christenings. The traditional Midsummer Festival at Backåkra attracts thousands of visitors, children and adults from far and wide, all carrying picnics and eager to participate in the dancing and celebrations. |
