Medieval Ystad

Experience Medieval Ystad, an amazing adventure, July 10-13, 2008.

Once upon a time in the town of Ystad, 363 years ago…

The year is 1372…early in the morning, men, women and children from the outlying villages and farms make their way to Bjersjöholm to sell their wares and join in the festivities. The knights and soldiers are already there, standing guard, as are the jesters who are making fun of one and all. Later in the day the knights will participate in the traditional jousting tournaments, although there will be some skirmishes between the different participants earlier in the day.Danish knights from Skanderborg in Denmark are expected, and that brings tension and excitement in the air. Some of the visitors, though, stay calm and enjoy a glass of wine and the atmosphere in the castle cellars. There is also a rumour about a wedding in the little chapel – so all visitors are up to an amazing medieval adventure.

The gates of Bjersjöholm castle are open again for the medieval feast - ”Medeltida Ystad” (Medieval Ystad) and the knights, jesters, musicians, archers, gunners and craftsmen – just as they were in 1372. Even the Danish knights have threatened to show the Swedes a thing or two. “Medeltida Ystad” is a medieval carnival at its best – the time machine works!

Knights’ land, a medieval playground for children, is popular with the young and the young at heart. It is here they can try out medieval instruments and games as well as dress up in medieval clothes. Everyone can stroll around the castle grounds where they can see the craftsmen at work and taste medieval sweetmeats and beverages and watch the jesters perform. The medieval days, July 10-13 2008,  are packed with events and fun – make sure you don’t miss this great opportunity to experience things as they once were.
